Notes on the Substances in our Chemistry Lab:

Bromothymol Blue Solution:
Chemical Formula: C27H28Br2O5S

Calcium chloride:
Chemical Formula: CaCl2
ionic compound
highly soluble in water
can irritate skin, lungs and nose

Sodium Bicarbonate:
-chemical compound NaHCO3
-white, solid, crystalline
-slight alkalikne taste (washing soda is called sodium carbonate)
-disolved in many mineral springs
-commonly called baking soda, bread soda, cooking soda
-non-flammable
-can treat acid indigestion, heartburn
-effective in cleaning and scrubbing
-used in BC dry chemical fire extinguishers

Interview with an Electron:

1. Metallic Bond
~ There's an attraction of positive ions and free-moving electrons
~ Substances are good conductors of electric current

2. Ionic Bond
~ Compounds have a crystal-lattice structure
~ There's a transfer of electrons
~ A metal reacts with a nonmetal

3. Covalent Bond
~ There's an attraction between nuclei and shared electrons
~ Two or more nonmetals are involved

Three sports that we play and how they relate to bonds:

Swimming:It is covalent because the water that makes up the pool is a covalent bond. Also the caps are made of silcon and the substance silcon is covalent.
Softball: It is metallic because the bat is metal and can conduct electric current.
Horseback Riding: It is ionic because the horseshoe transfers electrons to the horse's foot combining to form the shoe for the hooves.
